Gartner's vice president Jay Pultz states that IT Infrastructure and Operations (I & O) represents 60 per cent of total IT spending worldwide. Pultz goes onto state that I & O cost savings of 10 per cent in twelve months and up to 25 per cent in three years can be achieved by implementing as fully as possible 10 key actions.
One of the actions involves the implementation of ITIL best practice, as part of streamlining IT Operations. I&O accounts for approximately 50 per cent of the total enterprise IT head count, with most of the I&O staff being involved in day-to-day and tactical operational processes. Streamlining the processes to be as efficient as possible assists to contain head count and associated costs. Implementing ITIL with the principal goal of improving service management and quality also has been known to reduce operating expenses as well.
The other key actions were:
- Defer non-critical Key Initiatives
- Re-examine Networking Costs
- Consolidate I&O
- Virtualize I&O
- Reduce Power and Cooling Needs
- Contain Storage Growth
- Push Down IT Support
- Enhance IT Asset Management (ITAM)
- Optimize Multi-sourcing
